On September 14th, 1980, one of the greatest moments in the history of comedy music occurred. A 20-year-old "Weird Al" Yankovic went to sit in on a live radio episode of "The Dr. Demento Show" on KMET in Los Angeles. That night he met drummer and fellow Dr. D. comedy song contributor, Jon "Bermuda" Schwartz. Al asked Dr. Demento is he could perform a new song parody live on the air, to which the Doctor happily obliged. Al played the accordion and sang lead vocal, and recruited Bermuda to keep the tempo by hitting Al's empty accordion case. Dr. D. Show regulars joined in, with "Musical Mike" Kieffer and Sulu Dubow on hand music, Damaskas on background vocals, and "Beefalo Bill" Burk, Tohm, and Jeri on 'miscellaneous insanities'. Dr. Demento hit record on the tape machine, gave Al an intro, and what followed was 2 minutes and 39 seconds of demented magic, "Another One Rides The Bus", a parody of the Queen hit "Another One Bites The Dust". The song was an instant smash hit on "The Dr. Demento Show", and soon radio stations from across the country and the world were clamoring to get their hands on it. It helped launch Al's legendary career, and certainly help make "The Dr. Demento Show" more wonderfully demented.
September 14th, 2020, the day (after) this track posts at the Funny Music Project, is the 40th ANNIVERSARY of "ANOTHER ONE RIDES THE BUS"! A couple weeks back during our live video-streaming online comedy music concert event "FuMPFeST At Home 2020", we concluded the 6-hour festival with a live performance cover of "Another One Rides The Bus", with myself (the great Luke Ski) on lead vocals, TV's Kyle on accordion, and Lindzilla on accordion case, duck call, and background vocals (all of us wearing masks), to honor its forthcoming 40th Anniversary. I got a couple of good recordings of it from the room, which Kyle mixed together for us. We then asked "Weird Al" if we could have his permission to post our "Bus" cover here at the FuMP dot com, and he gave us the thumbs-up to do so! So thank you again so much to Al, and congratulations on 40 years of this amazing piece of mass transinsanity!
Look for this recording on the upcoming FuMPFest 2020 compilation CD, available soon!
