Taylor Swift performs here in Salt Lake City tomorrow night. Spoiler alert: If you're attending that or any other concert on her current tour, her grand finale is the song "Love Story."
"Love Story," for those of you who didn't help make it one of the biggest-selling singles of all time, is Taylor Swift's oh-so-romantic retelling of Romeo and Juliet. The tween-friendly tune randomly name-checks The Scarlet Letter and provides a happy ending that is 100 percent faithful to William Shakespeare's play. "I talked to your dad," says her Romeo. "Go pick out a white dress."
Wait. On second thought, that's not exactly the way Shakespeare wrote it. In fact, his version has such a violently unhappy ending that you could go so far as to call it a tragedy. Much like Shakespeare himself did in titling it The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet.
So let's set the record straight, shall we?
M. Spaff Sumsion: Concept and lyrics
Chris Mezzolesta: Lead vocals, backing vocals, and uninvited guest vocals
Bob Emmet: All instruments, production, and mixing

Remember when Superhorse fell on Romeo and crushed him to death? Man, Juliet was pissed.

The original lyric is so mind-bendingly idiotic that I consider Spaff's re-retelling of this story to be a sort of philanthropic public service. Oh and Ian, I only used autotune on the first two lines, but I don't know what Chris did with the tracks before he sent them. Whatever it was, it was probably just to annoy you.

Hooray for a Kanye moment!!

Spaff's retelling of anyone's story is ALWAYS a good read, as far as I'm concerned. Having Chris and Bob interpret it so well is icing on the cake!

LOVED IT! When you mentioned the Dire Straits song I died laughing. Another brilliant song!

YES! OMG!!! YES! The Dire Straits mention was KILLER! That and the banjo. I love me some Dire Straits references and banjo! I didn't just LOL... I actually, really, honestly laughed. Out loud. For nearly ten seconds. Thanks for that!

Thanks, all!
I'm relieved that some of you like the interruption. I was about to remove it since it's so, like, 2009, but I'm glad Bob and Chris convinced me to leave it in.
Years ago I went to a lesbian bar with some female coworkers, and when the Indigo Girls' cover of Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet" came on, the place erupted and everyone sang along. It was surreal. Never have I had the female/male ratio so overwhelmingly in my favor and yet had it matter so little.
"You and me, babe. How 'bout it?"
"What?"
Incidentally, I just learned that the Indigo Girls lost the 1990 Best New Artist Grammy to Milli Vanilli. Wow. I love the Internet.
Anyway, public thanks to Bob and Chris on more stellar work. I'm thrilled with their execution of these characters. Heh.

Just when I think the Cosmonauts can't get any more awesome, they do. This song was prime for parody, and you guys did a prime job. Shakespeare fans will join hands and sing this song around the cauldron fire long, long into the night.

It always bothered me how Taylor Swift "retconned" the story of R&J in her song, thanks for setting the record straight, Bob, Spaff & Salad! I like this quite a bit, but there seems to be an excess of autotune here. (Hang on, I'm a kettle....the pot is on line two, and says I'm black...brb)
