Kurt Kirton, the founding member of Kurplunk, was turned on to Weird Al and Dr. Demento as a Mississippi college student. "Even before that, I was making my own goofy fake audio commercials on cassette," he grins. "In INEVITABLE, my EDM act, we've done a few parodies and funny songs. Once I started to get loads of ideas for more, I thought, "I've got to make a side project under a different name and release this hilarious material. The album has been a ton of fun to write and produce." So in early 2023, Kurplunk was born as Kirton started to write for the debut release.
"Live, Kurplunk is myself and most times a duetist since I like to have another singer alongside me on some of the songs in a show. In the studio, thanks to AI, it's mostly me singing--sometimes with Jason Beetz (my band mate in INEVITABLE) or another friend co-writing or recording. The music spans most genres, from jazz to pop, dance, country, bluegrass, and rock, etc. I figured why not break out of the pop/EDM zone and try many different styles!" he continues.
Doing so--and adding programming and mixing to his production skills--was quite the challenge, especially when most of the engineers programming and mixing the songs Kirton isn't are in foreign countries. Budget for these comedy songs was tight since he's still not sure how reception to this music will be. "One of my top goals is to get monetized at YouTube because I think streaming plays will be the main interaction with this music versus song purchase. Then that revenue can be put back into releasing future Kurplunk albums," he explains.
Instrumentation was another issue for Kurplunk's music since some styles require instruments that can't be achieved well through programming or aren't acceptable as a synthesized sound. Luckily sites like Fiverr and local contacts in Nashville were able to supply the necessary parts. Core tenants like writing the most catchy melodies possible, attention to arrangement and production details, and well crafted lyrics are still Kirton's focus even in this new funny song endeavor.
"Back in about 2019 I read in the New York Times about a comedy songs artist whose music--consisting of mostly simply vocal and piano--was monetized and getting tons of YouTube views over the long term. That only gave me more inspiration to release a full album of comedy songs. I know the industry, singles, and 'the machine' work differently for funny music, but when it's your passion, why not give it a go!"
