Kyle and I had just been to a Flaming Lips concert and we wanted to make a song that sounded kind of like them. Space is a running theme in a lot of their songs, so it was obvious to make a song about that. We knew we'd have to use a lot of synths, so this song's loaded with them. Though I'm not sure if the final product really sounds like a Flaming Lips song at all... probably not. And the lyrics ended up being pretty Bowie inspired anyway.
And yeah, the title is a reference to Alien. Hey, at least I didn't write a song called "Space Doggity."
Honestly, one of my favorites from you guys. Good, subtle humor..I like that.

Bowie-inspired is right. Very trippy. Lots of subtle moods invoked by the images of (I presume) a guy dying in his car. Grace Jones' "Warm Leatherette" on xanex! Great production. I'm curious about your drum eq and mix - how'd you get them to cut through so well? And they're spread out a little from center, yes? - Jesse

Not his car... he's actually dying in space. I like to think that in the future Google Maps will be expanded to contain the outer reaches of the universe. :P
Thanks for your comments on the production. We work really hard on getting that part right. It's really all thanks to Steve Goodie. He really knows his stuff. You should ask him about the drum EQs cause that was really all him.

Naaah, we love JoCo. But even he agrees that "Space Doggity" is a dumb title. :P
