the great
Luke Ski
Anime Fan
featuring Carrie Dahlby
Continuing in my career long quest to have a song on every major topic in the many worlds of geeky fandom, I bring you my tribute to the entire genre of Japanese Animation, more commonly known here in the states as "Anime". This parody of "Candyman" By Christina Aguilera sung by Carrie Dahlby covers everything to the kiddie programs, to the giant robot shows, to the teen melodramas, to the 'adult' stuff. With any luck, there will be at least a dozen AMVs posted on YouTube of this song within a month. If you make one, please be sure to tell folks in titles at the end of the video that they can find the song "Anime Fan" at "the FuMP dot com"! Arigato! ;D Music by Bob "Perfect Mix Forever" Emmett

This song is now available on the following CDs:

Banzai! No WONDER Carrie Dahlby's songs keep getting pushed back! But just as the Seamonkette is to the Seamonkey, so am Carrie to Luke (minus the marriage) and all that I can say to yet another successful collab is, "Wonder Twin powers... ACTIVATE!" Does that qualify in the context of anime?

I love the art and the song, even though I know very little about anime. :)

By the way, what are they saying on that very cool poster?
2010-03-11 lukeski
"Otaku", which is a term for someone who is a super huge anime fanboy or fangirl.

It amazed me how far back anime goes here in the States, and how many I've seen throughout my 33 years.

Hey Luke we were in little Tokyo on Sunday and saw that giant anime rabbit thing in a souvenir shop! Thought of you...I asked my daughter, What does he do? Have special powers or death rays or something? No, she said. He's just a rabbit.

I wouldn't be any kind of fanboy if I didn't nitpick. "Otaku" means much more than just a "super huge anime fan." It originally had a much more negative connotation in Japanese culture as an individual given to total obsession (similarly, the term "fan" was derived from "fanatic"). To many in Japan, it's very derogatory and a serious insult. Today, it's been largely embraced by US anime fans and is not seen so negatively in Japanese culture either due to the fact that prominent people in society admitting that they are anime fans. Anime director Miyazaki is a revered figure in Japanese culture as well. And that's your lesson in Japanese culture for today.

Oh, and also -- nice work to Luke Ski and Dahlby. I think this has to break some kind of record for most anime references in a song.
