Devo Spice Update - 2/11/09

Greetings people who have been waiting with baited breath wondering just when the hell I was going to send out another one of these things. Well your wait is over!

I don't have a whole lot going on music related at the moment. (I have a virtual cargo ship worth of non-music related stuff going on, but you don't want to hear about that. Look! I re-caulked my shower! See? I told you you didn't want to hear about it.) But I do have a couple shows coming up I need to plug in an attempt to convince/trick/kidnap (circle one) you into coming to one or all of these shows.

--== NEW YORK SHOW: 2/24 IN NEW YORK (...DUHHHH...) ==--

I will be performing along with the lovely and talented Rob Balder at Katsucon, which isn't really in DC but it's in that general area. It's actually going to be held at the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia this weekend (February 13-15, in case you don't read this for another month or two, in which case you missed a great show; Rob performed "Come Sail Away" while wearing a tutu and drinking Mountain Dew through a straw in his nose, it was impressive.)

Our show will be Saturday from 1:00 to 2:30 in Live 2, which I imagine is somewhere between Live 1 and Live 3. We'll have a merch table set up all weekend, so if you're at the con stop by help us unload some of this merch/wonderful material/worthless crap (circle one) that we're trying to get rid of.

--== NEW YORK SHOW: 2/24 IN NEW YORK (...DUHHHH...) ==--
On Tuesday, February 24th I'll be performing at the Broadway Comedy Club in New York City along with Punch 59 Sketch Comedy. The show starts at 8. Admission is $5 and there is a 1 drink minimum.

The club is located at 318 W. 53rd St. in New York. Their web site is http://www.broadwaycomedyclub.com, but there's currently no mention of our show on their calendar. We're working on rectifying that.

What more do I need to say?

Oh yeah, March 6-8 in Bloomington, MN. Performers include Carrie Dahlby, DJ Particle, Devo Spice, Insane Ian, Marc Gunn, MC Lars, Possible Oscar, Positive Attitude, Power Salad, Rob Balder, Soggy Potato Chips, The Feng Shui Ninjas, The Great Luke Ski, Wally Pleasant, and Worm Quartet.

You can also help out this wonderful convention by picking up a copy of the fund raiser compilation CD available at http://www.marscondementia.com. All the proceeds go to help offset the travel costs of the performers coming to rock for you. So if you haven't gotten yours yet DO IT NOW DAMMIT WHAT THE HELL ARE YOU WAITING FOR IT'S LIKE 3 HOURS OF MUSIC OR SOMETHING.

So, was that worth the wait?! Nah, I didn't think so either. I'll try harder next time.

MySQL vs. Microsoft SQL Server?

Greetings fellow programming type people.

Anyone out there who has worked with both MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server, can you please answer the following questions? I've worked with MySQL for years, but managed to successfully avoid MS's version until tonight.

1. Are there any syntax differences?
I'm really only going to be doing 1 call- a SELECT call- and then getting the data to spit back out at the user. Will this syntax still work?

SELECT * FROM doctors WHERE code = "123456789"

or did Microsoft do something stupid to the SELECT syntax?

2. How does one administer the database?
With MySQL I'm used to using PHPMyAdmin to handle setting it up and dealing directly with the data. Does Microsoft's have something similar? And if not, how would I go about importing a 1000-line Excel file into the database?

3. Are there any "gotchas" that I may need to be aware of when working with MS's version.

I'll be doing all the heavy lifting in PHP, so I'm in familiar territory there at least. The client doesn't have (or more accurately doesn't want to spend) a lot of money on this job, but of course it needs to be done right away, so if I'm in for a nightmarish experience I'd like to know ahead of time.

Manic Mondays

This week's episode will likely be late as I can't seem to find the file that the guest host sent me. I've asked him for another copy.
